"The Framers intended citizens to serve in Congress for a season and then return to their private lives. Electoral politics was never supposed to be a career and, trust me, Congress is no place to grow old. And so, with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run for re-election," Gallagher said in his statement.
The congressman has represented Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District since 2017 and currently chairs the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
He joins more than a dozen House Republicans who won't seek re-election in 2024, according to the House Press Gallery.
Earlier this week, Washington GOP Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also announced that she wouldn't seek re-election this fall.

Wonder what kind of lunatic they'll try to replace him with? He represents part of northeastern WI, which is kind of a mixed bag, politically.
"CALL IT OFF--THIS IS BIGGER THAN YOU--CALL IT OFF"
GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher TO TRUMP
Who knew it would work out this way? They're not free to vote or speak their conscience. There's no work being done. Must be boring, frustrating. That's what I read from the Romney interview a couple months back.
And another one bites the dust.
Mike Gallagher is only 39 years old. He made headlines last week when he voted against impeaching Mayorkas.
He received a lot of backlash over that, including threats to primary him. And now heâs quitting.
In the last two years 26 year old @alexbruesewitz
ended Adam Kinzingerâs career for impeaching Trump, helped end Ron DeSantisâ presidential campaign before it started, and now just ended Mike Gallagherâs career for failing to impeach Mayorkas.
God bless Alex!
@RepGallagher was considered by many as a rising star in the GOP. But instead of embracing the MAGA movement, he decided to betray the grassroots and protect the swamp.
Mike is now quitting congress because he knows he would face an embarrassing defeat in the upcoming primary.
His vote to protect Alejandro Mayorkas was a foolish, career ending mistake.
He claims that he voted against the Mayorkas impeachment out of principle, but thatâs just not the truth.
As reported by the Heritage Foundationâs @MHowellTweets, Gallagher was potentially involved in a horse trading agreement with Sec. Mayorkas. Otherwise know as Quid pro quo.
As we find out more information on this serious allegation, I wouldnât be shocked if Gallagher found himself under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. He deserves due process, but it sure looks bad!
But for the reporters, members of Congress, and grassroots patriots across Wisconsin, who are reaching out to me asking if I will run⦠letâs just say I am now taking a VERY STRONG LOOK.
I look forward to my upcoming meetings with the County GOP Chairs in WI 8th Congressional District and we might just have to throw a MAGA rally later this month in the Fox Valley.
The people of #WI8 deserve a fighter who will help secure the southern border and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.
Good riddance to Mike Gallagher and God bless Wisconsin AND America.
This man is a good Republican--yes, I can say that. Seems to me he just had it with the Repug Party!!
I remember him making a video during the Insurrection, asking Trump to call off the rioters.
CALL IT OFF--ITS OVER ETC
Cook has it as GOP+10. Could Madison Cawthorn please move there and get elected so we can get more regular reports on the orgy habits of the GOP?
He was Scott Walker's foreign policy advisor when Walker ran for president, and I can't bring myself to trust him in any way.
I think he's gearing up to run for Governor of Wisconsin against our wonderful Tony Evers.
He's had his mug on the local news twice a week for several weeks now, otherwise we haven't seen hide nor hair of him since the last election cycle.
Another Walker Republican would completely destroy the State of Wisconsin. Ugh. I hope I'm wrong.
