Bush will seek $87 billion for Iraq

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will announce on Sunday night that he plans to ask Congress for $87 billion to fund the U.S. military deployment in Iraq and pay for reconstruction, a Republican source said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the money would fund U.S. military operations in Iraq and reconstruction over the coming budget year.

38. A Modest Fundraising Proposal

Our president has just asked the congress to provide him another 87 billion to clean up the mess he has made of Iraq and Afghanistan. There may be an alternative. Our president may not be much good at things like diplomacy or economics. There is one thing, however, at which he is exceedingly good. He has a remarkable talent for fundraising. He has taken the art of obtaining campaign donations to unprecedented levels.
Therefore he should not finance the cleanup by increasing the already staggering national debt, or worse, by betraying the taxpayers to whom he has recently returned his predecessors budget surplus, and then some. Rather, he should make use of his rare talent. He should launch in the white house, a series of thousand-dollar-a-plate dinners. To these he should invite everyone who voted for him in the 2000 election. Unfortunately a majority of the voters did not vote for him, so these dinners would only raise about $50 billion of the required amount, assuming that everyone showed up. In order to raise the remaining $37 billion, he would have to also invite the 100 million voters who did not care who won in 2000. Hopefully a third of them would now feel more patriotic and attend at $1000 a plate. This would still leave 3 or 4 billion, but he could pass the hat to some of his oil buddies. After all he has done favors for them from time to time.
