Germany stays firm on Iraq troops 'no'
BERLIN - The German government on Monday again ruled out sending troops to Iraq and refused to make any substantive comment on a weekend speech by US President George W Bush other than saying it had brought "movement".

"There are no plans to engage militarily," said Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's chief spokesman Bela Anda, adding that Berlin would only make a contribution to rebuilding Iraq in the humanitarian sector.

Anda said Germany remained by the joint position taken last week with France which termed US calls for a bigger United Nations role in Iraq a step in the right direction but insisted that more was needed.
