Neil Young Praises Michael Moore

Veteran rocker Neil Young has praised documentary-maker Michael Moore for making his political tune "Rockin' in the Free World" relevant again.

Moore used the 1989 track in his President George W. Bush-bashing movie 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' turning it into an anthem calling for a new premier in the run-up to this month's U.S. election.

The "Heart of Gold" singer says, "The way he edited the film made it very topical for now."

And Young is delighted Moore has returned to the song - to make a four-minute accompanying video.

He adds, "I just saw it for the first time half an hour ago. He's done a great job."

he was with a group of about 12, and they were the nicest, most laid back people. His seriously disabled son was there as well, so I'm guessing he takes him with when on tour. I'll respect him, if for that alone.

31. That is NOT a fair statement to make about Neil Young.

Neil Young's credentials are impeccable, as is his integrity. And if somebody wants to resurrect some of his stuff and apply it to a different/later era, then all the better for the rest of us. The best, most powerful and most relevant songs or artworks or commentaries are those that can apply to conditions that repeat themselves due unfortunately to relentless human stoooopidity across the years. A worthwhile message is a worthwhile message. WHENEVERTHEHELL it's used. PERIOD.

The Southern rockers got over "Southern Man" after a few years, but a lot of lefties can't forgive him for his infatuation with Reagan Conservatism in the early 1980s -- but, if I recall, it lasted all of about a year.

Neil drank the Kool-Aid, and then puked it up. Sadder, wiser, etc. He makes mistakes and learns from them, which is more than most people can say.

Young wasn't into Reaganism as a social or economic force, but specifically backed its militant foreign policy. It was a position he still maintained through the reign of Bush the Elder and Gulf War I.

In certain ways, the US atrocities in Fallujah and elsewhere in Iraq can be traced to the policies that Young embraced, foolishly.

Good that he's come to his senses. Even when he espoused right wing militancy, I still liked his older, better music (and do so today). But let's be honest about his mistake: it was no trifle. What you call a "flirtation" was the embrace of a worldview that cost many people their lives.

36. That part is news to me

Young has occasionally (at least) criticized our military adventures, too. But it's very possible my views about his politics have been filtered through his supporters -- I don't keep close tabs on the man, but I've been hearing the intense critics off-and-on for two decades, and they all seem to point to a few bone-headed remarks he made 22 or 23 years ago, especially the one about paraplegic people "standing on their own two feet".

A lot of people have been supporters of a "strong military", generally as a reaction to hatred of the USA abroad. Now that the "strong military" is being used as the diplomatic arm of a corrupt domestic regime intent on unapologetically imposing its will, a lot of those same people are having second thoughts.

But it's a hell of a way to convince people of the folly of making war.

37. I'd like some more info on Neil "backing" war in the Middle East.

Recently finished the 800+ page biography of Neil Young (Shakey by James McDonough). It mentioned his flirtation with Reagan that didn't last long. Can't recall the details you mention at all. And this was a pretty damn exhaustive study.

The main thing with Neil is his music. He's gone through a number of styles; I've been a fan since Buffalo Springfield. Some of his "musical stages" have been controversial but he keeps coming back with new, good stuff.

Besides, he's retained his Canadian citizenship.

and Neil's comments were an attempt to help others consider both sides of a particular issue. Neil Young is a very unique artist and his contribution to music stands well against all. He also has a sense of humor.
