California Crowd Hostile to Schwarzenegger's Wife
California Crowd Hostile to Schwarzenegger's Wife
Mon September 8, 2003 09:03 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - A crowd at a mall in California's capital greeted Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife Maria Shriver with hostility on Monday as she made her first solo appearance in the unpredictable gubernatorial campaign.

The Austrian-born Republican actor has generated very positive reaction in public since he announced that he would run to replace Governor Gray Davis in an Oct. 7 recall election, with many clamoring for his autograph and a handshake.

Yet opponents of the recall, including union members, gathered outside a Sacramento Wal-Mart to shout, carry placards and otherwise express their opposition to the recall when Shriver appeared at a voter registration booth.

"She's over here promoting a company that's refusing to pay health care for its workers," said Bill Camp, executive secretary of the Sacramento Central Labor Council. "She should be ashamed. Her grandfather would be appalled." (snip/...)

Maria Shriver Appearance Draws Combative Crowd in Sacramento
It was a mob scene at a Sacramento shopping center Monday afternoon as Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife made an appearance to help with voter registration.

At about 4 p.m., Maria Shriver, arrived at the Wal-Mart store at Natomas Marketplace to register voters and support her husband, but the scene at the voter registration table was anything but peaceful.

An estimated 25 recall opponents carrying placards and using bullhorns faced off against about 25 Schwarzenegger supporters even before Shriver arrived. Wal-Mart security had to be called out along with Sacramento police.

The scene was not helped by a crush of reporters from the national media who were trying to document Shriver's first attempt on her own to support her husband. (snip/...)

1. Sacramento Rocks!
Thanks, folks, for reminding this _______ (I changed my mind and didn't write THAT word - fill in your own slur) what her family has stood for.

3. Poor Maria
I think she's an abused wife. She weighs 87 pounds, and her husband is a Republican!

6. Poor Maria my A**. She could get out any time.

Methinks ye are joking, but if what you posit is true, she could leave the relationship right now. She has abundant resources, including a family who will close ranks around her, no matter what.

This is called a fall from grace. She is now paying for a bad choice she makes every day, which is staying married to that pig.

Here is my prediction. He will lose the race. She'll leave him. He'll make a few bitter appearances on Howard Stern. He'll make another terrible movie or two, and then drop out of sight. We won't hear of him again until he is jailed 13 years from now, after having been accused of sexual battery.

Edit: spelling

8. I was joking...
...I doubt he abuses her physically, but it's clear she's not gettin' any--he's too busy grabbing everything in sight.

I do believe she has some sort of problem--she's rail thin and not healthy looking at all. She must be very unhappy.

12. I know, I hope for her sake
that my scenario above comes true (well, except for the sexual battery part).

I've never been able to figure out the connection between those two.

I know she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she could do far better.

She looks skeletal & soul-less, and this little debacle today might just be enough to push her over the edge. How humiliating. What a hell it must be to be married to that horror.

I suspect, as some others do, that she objected strongly to his running, and that he had agreed not to run, but let the excitement get to him on the Leno show. So, now she's stuck.

(So, yeah, I do feel a little sorry for her.)

But, hey, Maria, here's another thing your parents never taught you. Leave that filanderer. I don't care if he's the father of your kids, I don't care if your family frowns upon divorce. Hell, get the marriage annulled, if you want, just get out. That man is going nowhere but, well, down.

4. Wal-Mart?
What the hell was she thinking? Jeeze Louise! I wouldn't vote for Ahnold if he was the last man standing - but if I was Shriver, I'd be busy firing his campaign advisors tonight.

Yeah, right! I heard her earlier on a TV news clip. Her grandfather is turning over in his grave, I'm sure.

10. Figures...Natomas is 'the burbs'...
Some 10-15min out of Sacto. Still, Pixie says (and I agree) there's no way in hell she would have turned up in Rancho or Florin & Franklin; the deepest, darkest 'south area' (and we all use the term as as a term of endearment) ~

But then it's all like, "Damn It!! I had to work in Citrus all day! That would have been a hoot!"

11. Two points
1. Wal Mart mailed out pamphlets with Elizabeth Dole standing in front of an American flag and a flattering story inside when Dole was running for senator of North Carolina. This pamphlet did not count as a political contribution.

2 I worked very hard for Kathleen Kennedy Townsend when she ran for governor of Maryland. A lot of Democrats were angry that she was the nominee because they thought she was the candidate only because of her name. I was disappointed that the Kennedy name did not help KKT, but it's OK with me if it doesn't help Arnold.

17. Yes. She is JFK's niece. And, her grandfather, Joseph P. Kennedy
Married Rose Fitzgerald, the daughter of the mayor of Boston. This was a really big deal in those days!

Joseph (among other things) was a big Democrat. He was the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. And, he had an affair with a major Hollywood silent film star, Gloria Swanson. Also, he was a bootlegger during Prohibition. He was quite a colourful character, indeed!

They'll find opposition here. We're very excited. They should be confronted, and I'm glad they were!
