ON EDIT: Warren County is heavily Republican, so it may not ultinately make a difference, but that is beside the point when they close their building to outside observers with a bullshit reason. You always count votes in the open. Always.

Scrolling through the country results makes it seem Bush won every county by at least 2%, some he won at close to 75%. Then why is it so close?

So dumb question. If I add up all the precentages from each country and divide by 100, should that equal Bush's 50.90% total?

Bush did not win every county--if you scroll down, you'll see that Kerry's name is at the top of a lot of the counties.

Your math is also fuzzy. You'd need to multiply each percentage by the total votes cast in the county, then add them up and divide by the total number of votes cast in the state to get each candidate's %.

Simply adding the %'s up and dividing by 100 would yield a number far greater than 100.

Your method would weight each county equally, regardless of how many votes were actually cast there. Here's a simple example:

County A: Kerry gets 60,000 votes, Bush gets 40,000 votes. So Kerry has 60% and Bush has 40% there.

County B: Kerry gets 20,000 votes, Bush gets 30,000 votes. So Kerry has 40% and Bush has 60% in that county.

Averaging each percentage gives you (60+40)/2=50 for Kerry, and (40+60)/2=50 for Bush.

But adding up the vote totals, Kerry gets 80,000 of 150,000 votes cast, or 53%, while Bush gets 70,000 of 150,000, or 47%.

Adding percentages is usually a bad idea! (It's the equivalent of adding fractions without changing to a common denominator, if you rememeber that from back in the day.) Hope that helps.

I wanted to be sure that Athens County was an actual 0% vote in the total, instead of showing as no votes, but actually being counted. I added up all the counties. All the numbers listed add up to the total number of votes given.

Meaning.... "Precincts Reporting: 100.00%" is not true.

How can they say 100% without Athens? How can they legally certify the vote without Athens?

Why did bush win so big in Richland County, for instance? That is an area of severe urban blight. I would have expected a higher turnout among Democrats.

It also looks like bushco's strategy to court Amish voters worked. In Holmes County the turnout was overwhelmingly for bush. That is an Amish stronghold. Usually the Amish don't vote. This year they voted - for bush. I don't think they were told we are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Amish may not be too happy when they find out that bushco left that little item out during visits.

You know the over votes really were an intended vote for someone. I wish they would just go with the intent of the voter on this issue. If someone voted for Kerry and wrote in Kerry, I think it is clear the intent of the voter (this did happen in Florida in 2000).
