KINSHASA (AFP) - The Democratic Republic of Congo (news - web sites) (DRC) began deploying troops to the east of the country amid reports that Rwandan forces were operating in the area and thousands of civilians were fleeing clashes.
Announcing the deployment on national television, President Joseph Kabila warned the troops would "defend the integrity" of the territory and "kick out" any aggressors.
"The army is in a state of alert and its units are currently deploying ... to the eastern provinces," Kabila said, two days after announcing that 10,000 extra soldiers would be sent to the east to maintain security there.
"We will never bow to this new threat to the transitional institutions in our country. Rwanda has goals that are political, economic, exploitative and predatory," he said in his first reaction to allegations that Rwandan troops have crossed into the country.
