Replacing Edwards..Waiting over for Senate hopefuls

Waiting is over for Democrats
JIM MORRILL AND TIM FUNK STAFF WRITERS

N.C. Democrats began sorting out their options Monday, a day after John Edwards announced he won't seek re-election.

Meanwhile Republicans were optimistic that Edwards' decision will help their presumed candidate, U.S. Rep. Richard Burr.

"It takes out the power of incumbency, the advantage of incumbency," said Republican national chairman Ed Gillespie.

Edwards said in a Sunday letter to state Democratic Party Chairwoman Barbara Allen that he had decided against another run for the Senate because he wants to "devote all of my energy" to his run for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.

1. Dan Blue is the man.....
I hope he runs and not Erskine Bowles. He seems like a bit of a tool to me....

5. Blue would get walloped
If you want to win, it's either Bowles or Etheridge.

6. Elaine Marshall or Charles Meeker as a dark horse
I agree on Blue. He also went into an alliance with repugs over a perceived slight.

2. Edwards is crazy
to do this,IMO. He won't win and he's leaving that seat vulnerable.

4. I agree
He's just a first term Senator, he's young and there's plenty of time for him to run for President. But now his seat is vulnerable in a Southern state.

9. Agreed, Why Sen. Edwards, Why??
If he were more ahead in the polls, I could understand, but leaving his seat vunerable to a GOP take over is insane. which makes me wonder his commitment to dem party.

7. If the GOP gets a 60% majority in the Senate,

... they'll be filibuster-proof and able to pass a cloture motion on any debate. Particularly with Miller, Nelson, and Breaux, the Dems would be toast. And it wouldn't make a helluva lot of difference who was in the White House. In which direction is the DLC 'L'-ing?

8. Miller is gone
and they need to get Cleland interested and embarrassing Saxby Chambliss in every direction he goes.

10. Erskin Bowles, will win the seat...
Again the political climate is changing in North Carolina...even the old vote as dad did..are disgusted with Bush...he might be a republican, but every thing he dose is against the grain of republicans in North Caroling, they are loosing jobs, the older are suffering from loss of int. on their investments, and the high price of fuel and meds

Erskin Bowles , if had a longer time to campaign would have beaten Elizabeth Dole...something over drawing lines , gave him a short time to campaign. Frankly I would like to see Hunt run for the seat.
