Spain has been dealing with 'terrorism' for a long, long time. Somehow they've managed to keep their freedom reasonably intact in spite of it -- unlike us here in America.

...It's likely to go on for a long time if it has any significant support.

I mean, Northern Ireland has been dealing with this sort of situation for what: 800 years or so? Long, long time.

Has more peace come to Northern Ireland by bombing and attacking it, or negotiations? Seems to me negotiations works a lot better, but can take a long time (especially when the 'splitters' like the Real IRA decide to keep fighting). But they didn't get ANYWHERE when they simply relied on force.

14. Yup. ETA does a bombing campaign every summer tourist season.

I was touring Spain in 1996 with a jazz band and several places we went to had ETA bombs going off in hotels and airports just before or after we were in the area.

That shook me up a bit.

Then TWA800 went down off NYC on 7/17/96 killing the wife of sax player Wayne Shorter. My buddy was his road manager and I knew he would have to be telling Wayne what happened and cancel the tour they were on. In fact, our band could have easily been on that flight.

When you fly overseas to commute to work this stuff is very very real.

That's a little odd. ETA usually honors its own truces. However, so many of the ETA regulars have blown themselves up in accidents that these could be rogues claiming to be members of the ETA. Which would be quite dangerous and disturbing on its own.

There was also a major bust of a few remaining hard-core northern-Basque ETA members in southern France.

For all intents an purposes, ETA is finished. Most of the Basque activists who used to belong to it have joined Batasuna ("Unity"), the Basque version of Sinn Fein to the ETA's IRA.
