(U.S. Appointed) Iraqi president leaves for Washington

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Interim president Ghazi al-Yawar left Iraq (news - web sites) for an official visit to the United States where he is expected to meet US President George W. Bush (news - web sites), an official at his office said.

"President Ghazi al-Yawar left for Washington this afternoon. He is to meet US President George W. Bush as well as other American officials," an official at his office said.

The largely ceremonial president is being accompanied by Industry Minister Hajem al-Hassani, Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan, Transport Minister Luai al-Aris et Public Works Minister Nesrine al-Baruari.

Yawar's trip comes barely two months before landmark general elections are scheduled to take place in Iraq.
