BAGHDAD (AP) — Gunmen killed 17 Iraqi civilians working for the U.S. military in the northern city of Tikrit on Sunday, while four Iraqi security personnel died in separate attacks in nearby towns.
Capt. Bill Coppernoll, spokesman for the Tikrit-based U.S. 1st Infantry Division, said insurgents fired from two cars at several buses carrying Iraqis employed by coalition forces in the city 80 miles north of Baghdad.
Coppernoll said 17 people died and 13 were wounded in the attack at about 8:30 a.m.
"(Insurgents) attacked them as they were going to work," Coppernoll said. "Two vehicles opened fire on civilian buses that had stopped to let the workers off, who were employed by coalition forces."
