CAMP PENDLETON – President Bush braced Marines Tuesday for escalating violence leading up to the Jan. 30 elections in Iraq, but vowed the vote would not be postponed.

"The terrorists will do all they can to delay and disrupt free elections in Iraq and they will fail," the president told more than 7,000 troops gathered on a football field.

Bush made a one-day, cross-country round trip to meet with Marines and families at Camp Pendleton, which has suffered by far the greatest casualty toll of any U.S. military base in the war in Iraq.

He's been a little off on the violence ever abating, of course, but it has escalated each time he said it would. Not that that's a hard prediction to make.
