White House Defends Rumsfeld Amid Iraq Criticism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is doing a "terrific job," the White House said on Tuesday as the Pentagon chief faced mounting criticism from lawmakers in both parties over his handling of Iraq.

A senior House of Representatives Democrat, Rep. David Obey of Wisconsin, last week called for Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz, deputy secretary of defense, to resign over "serious miscalculations" that have cost the lives of U.S. troops, isolated America from its allies and gobbled up money.

Republicans including Sen. John McCain of Arizona have questioned Rumsfeld's decision not to increase the number of U.S. troops in Iraq to bring security to a country still in chaos five months after the fall of President Saddam Hussein's government.

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday at which Wolfowitz testified, McCain said the administration clearly "underestimated the size of the challenge" in Iraq.
