U.S. Clears Way for $8.5 Billion in Loans to Turkey

By Adam Entous

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration has informed Congress that it is ready to provide Turkey with up to $8.5 billion in loans, a move that could help improve U.S.-Turkish relations after months of bickering over Iraq.

In a letter to key congressional committees obtained by Reuters on Tuesday, the State Department said it decided to go forward with the aid package to support Turkey's "economic reform process" and to cushion the economic shock from the war in neighboring Iraq.

"The U.S. attaches significant importance to a strong, economically stable, and democratic Turkey as a hopeful model for the Islamic world. Such a model is particularly valuable following regime change in Iraq," the letter said.

1. my aren't we generous
we're spending money everywhere but here.

I feel like my tax dollars, and everybody elses, are being loaded into huge dump trucks and disappearing over the border.

Oh wait, that's exactly what IS happening.

Does Halliburton have contracts in Turkey?

2. exactly
we are buying the world that can be bought or destroying the world that can't. This is utterly ridiculous and the American people need to know. We need to put together the details of what we are doing monetarily and publish it. Some site must have the data.

5. I wonder how much love and affection...
for the US that $8.5B will buy? Probably none, Turkey will take the money and laugh at the Bush administration for being so gullible.

7. Remember how much the GOP bitched when Clinton gave Mexico
a $3.5 billion dollar loan, which they paid back with interest before it was due.
