Simon and Garfunkel Reunite

Break out the parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme--Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are back together.

Six months after reuniting for a performance of "The Sound of Silence" to open this year's Grammy Awards, the legendary folk-rock duo confirmed plans Tuesday for a long-rumored reunion tour, their first in more than 20 years.

Dubbed Old Friends: The 2003 Concert Tour, the trek will kick off at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on October 18 and hit 36 cities across North America, including stops in Cleveland, Chicago, Denver, San Jose, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Toronto and Washington, D.C., before wrapping up sometime before Christmas.

Those guys need to write some songs together. Paul Simon's written some strong stuff by himself, certainly. But I'd like to hear them collaborate on some new material.

...since Simon wrote all their "original" songs by himself. (Granted, Artie did get a songwriting credit for "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," but that was really pretty much for his arrangement of the traditional British folk song that the piece is built around.)

For the less discriminating listener, Paul Simon's album/musical CAPEMAN just crushes balls, songwriting wise. I highly recommend it:)

3. "Like a Rock"...?????

The singers plan to cull set lists largely from the five albums they recorded between 1964 and 1970, including their greatest hits, like "Mrs. Robinson," "Hazy Shade of Winter," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Like a Rock," "Homeward Bound" and "America."

Gee, I didn't know S&G performed the song that was the basis for the Chevy truck ad! They sure managed to sound an awful lot like Bob Seger!

There's the song "I am a rock" which is about being antisocial and too afraid to love, etc. And there's the song "like a rock" which is not the Dodge commercial. The chorus goes "And my mother loves, she loves me loves me loves me, yeah she loves me like a rock, rocks me like the rock of ages." They're both good.

...but it was a Simon solo number, and the title was Loves Me Like A Rock.

I often wondered if the last verse ("And if I was the president..."), was "inspired" by Nixon's "my mother was a saint" farewell speech.

9. Saw Simon & Garfunkel in 1968

in Phoenix, Arizona, when rbnyc was still riding in my belly.

Funny thing. She knew all the words to the songs they performed when she was old enough to talk and sing. ;-)

The first time I heard them was when I was channel surfing on my transister radio outside Chicago and discovered WBZ in Boston. It was "The Sound of Silence."

I'll crawl 70 miles to Tampa if I must to see this reunion!

I saw the headline on Yahoo News and went crazy. They're my favroites of all time!

And even though they're over 60, they proved at the Grammys that they can still harmonize beautifully.

Right, the name of the S&G song is "I Am a Rock" (which I can play on guitar) and the other song was a Simon solo song called "Loves Me Like a Rock".

I love these guys. I hope I can see one of their concerts, since this will probably be the last time they tour.

Hey this is GREAT NEWS!!! I grew up listening to these guys. My Padre was classical music all the way....That's pretty much all I was allowed to perform on the piano. Thing is he turned me on to S&G...and I loved them. Their music was the only 'rock' music allowed in the house or I was allowed to play.

I was never too crazy about Paul by himself....he always seemed sort of weak. Being a musician and having listened to both after the split, I was was left under the impression that, though it was never mentioned, Garfunkel must have done most of the arranging...or he retained the arranger from the days of the original duo. What made them great to me was the combination of Paul's tunes, Art's voice and the arranger of their later music (circa Mrs. Robinson, Cecilia and BOTW)...whoever it was.

Listening to them brings back warm memories of the 60's and my childhood. Oddly though, their music is timeless. It fits well in any generation and transcends fads and trends...which to me makes it truley classic.

15. I saw them at the Paramount Theater in 1993

It was am amazing show -- one set of Simon & Garfunkel, two sets of Paul Simon solo (one set focusing on 70's material, another set focusing on Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints), and an encore of S&G. Too bad there isn't a video.
