The citizens of Foley and Bay Minette in Alabama had heard the horror stories of soldiers killed and maimed in Iraq by bombs and bullets that shredded Humvees like paper.
So when the local National Guard unit was ordered to Iraq, everybody from the towns' mayors to their schoolchildren rallied early this year to provide better protection for members of the 711th Signal Battalion.
With financial donations and sweat, they outfitted the doors and underbellies of three dozen Humvees with steel plates. South Alabama had done its duty for the men and women of Company C.

Just so it's understood to those from outside the Atlanta area--the AJC is considered center-left. Why does it feel compelled to armor Rumsfeld by burying such an important part of the story 12 grafs down?
