August 26, 2003--American perceptions of the situation in Iraq have become more pessimistic during recent weeks.
Forty-one percent (41%) of Americans now believe that the War with Iraq makes the United States a more dangerous place to live. Just 39% believe that, in the long-run, the War will make the USA safer.
Those numbers represent a significant decline from earlier in the year. In April, while Operation Iraqi Freedom was in progress, 50% of Americans believed the War would make the US safer while 32% said it would make our country a more dangerous place to live.
Additionally, just 44% of Americans say that President George W. Bush is doing a good or excellent job of handling the situation with Iraq. That's down from 62% in April. A majority of Americans (52%) now give the President either a fair or poor rating for his leadership in Iraq.
