Hutchison upset some in El Paso ask her not to challenge Perry

EL PASO -- U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison reacted angrily recently after several El Paso business leaders suggested that she not challenge Gov. Rick Perry in 2006 because their large campaign contributions to state leaders have increased the city's influence in Austin.

During the private luncheon last week, Hutchison, R-Texas, was asked to instead run for re-election for the Senate. She responded by denouncing the role large contributions play in state government, some of those attending said.

The meeting was organized as a briefing by the senator on various issues, but several Perry supporters turned the conversation to the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Many of those at the meeting agreed the discussion got severely strained after some of the business leaders mentioned their large contributions to Perry, also a Republican. Hutchison has said she hasn't decided whether to run in 2006.

So has she gone on record nationally supporting it or is she just pandering to the science people here in TX in hopes of getting their support if she runs for gov?..sounds like she is creating a very small window for it's use the way she keeps repeating the words "safe" "ethical" and "responsible".

DALLAS – Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said Friday that state leaders should work with Gov. Rick Perry and the Legislature to develop a stem-cell research policy that keeps Texas from being "left in the dust by California.

Hutchison, a potential 2006 Republican primary challenger to Perry, referred to a landmark $3 billion initiative to fund stem-cell research passed by California voters in the November election.

The senator's comments came as she addressed University of Texas regents and medical college presidents at a special health issues retreat in Dallas.

"I think that Texas needs to have a responsible, ethical policy regarding stem-cell research," Hutchison said after the meeting. "I think if we are going to stay in the forefront of scientific discoveries, we are going to have to find an ethical way to keep the state-of-the-art experiments on stem cells and how they can displace unhealthy cells in people's bodies.

Not the biggest fan of the Senator's but I like it when anyone runs against incumbants and stirs the pot. Its the stagnation and the increasing comfort level that is so difficult to shake up in D.C.

Irregardless of parties, she's right. Campaign contributions enslave us and our leaders to corporations and business ties. Its wrong and should be illegal.

Ricky Perry for Senate and Kay Bailey Hutchinson for TexGov. I hate the bitter pill just as much as the next guy, but I'd rather see the cheerleader stay in the Senate (if Democrats can't prevail, of course). That would keep Bu$h-protector John Cornyn (Funeral-gate .. remember that?) as the junior senator from Texas. He is very dangerous. They are all awful. Perry is interested in one thing, and one thing only: getting his weenie waxed. Evidently he is Equal Opportunity only about who does that dirty deed to him!
