Ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and 11 top leaders of his regime have gone on hunger strike in their US detention centre.

Saddam was captured by US forces last December and faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.


"We have reliable information that Saddam Hussein and 11 other prisoners began a hunger strike to protest ill-treatment," Badiaa Aref Ezzat, the lawyer of former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz said.

He is being held in US custody in a secret location in Iraq and has reportedly received treatment for an enlarged prostate gland, hernia problems and eye trouble.

but who cares? Let the asshole starve. I'm sure he eats better than a lot of people in the world are at this moment; people who have never done anything to deserve hunger. So if Saddam Hussein doesn't want to eat, I'll bet there are a lot of people in Iraq alone who would like to have his meals.

I am not debating the merits of his past terrible deeds.

I am suspicious of anything that the US government does to anyone.

Why should they let him starve to death?
A fate worse than death for him would be that the Iraqi people would see him on trial and decide what should happen to him.

This way, the US government is allowing us to believe that HE wants to die and then he can not get a "fair" trial.

My concern is that the US, once again,does not demonstrate fairness and people all over the world will see him as a hero if he is to die as a result of a "hunger strike,"

If I am not mistaken, are they allowing anyone to see him? Shouldn't the Red Cross or some other organization be allowed to determine his condition?

The US military in Iraq (news - web sites) denied that ousted president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) was on hunger strike in his American detention centre.

"This absolutely does not involve Saddam. He's in good condition and is continuing with his normal routine, which includes taking his meals," said Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, a coalition spokesman on detention operations in Iraq.

"I'm trying to determine what grain of truth there might be about the other guys. A few of them might have been turning back some of their meals" but they were not on hunger strike, he said.

The Iraqi lawyer of former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz told AFP earlier that Saddam and 11 top officials of his toppled regime had been on hunger strike since Friday.

...I can't even cook up any righteous anger against a monster like Saddam Hussein anymore. So he killed and starved hundreds of thousands of his citizens? Big deal, we've managed to hurt them just as much with the occupation and the invasion and the sanctions before that, not to mention that we helped to prop his lousy ass up in the first place.

Fuck it. Let him starve, or go on trial, or whatever. I don't even care about him anymore. I'm sure he'll quietly drop off the radar like Manuel Noriega when he's outlived his usefulness to the propaganda machine. It's not like he'll be allowed to bring up anything interesting in his defense anyway. Justice? What the fuck is that?
