Bush launches personal war on flab after eating 'too many doughnuts'

A chastened President George W Bush has vowed to lose several inches off his waistline, after "too many doughnuts" on the campaign trail.

Mr Bush came into office four years ago as a lean, fanatically fit middle-distance runner, with a body and metabolism that put him in the top one per cent for his age. A rather more human figure emerged from his latest annual physical on Saturday, at which doctors found Mr Bush had gained 5.6lb in the past 16 months. They also detected slightly raised levels of cholesterol and an increased body-fat index.

The president bluntly described himself as "overweight", after emerging from his routine medical check-up at the National Naval Medical Station in Bethesda, a Washington suburb.

"I'm still standing," Mr Bush joked, before confessing to the physical effects of months on the campaign trail, snacking on unhealthy foods. "I've obviously gone through a campaign where I probably ate too many doughnuts, if you get my drift," he said.
