Bush Slaps New Sanctions on N.Korea, Myanmar, Cuba
WASHINGTON (Reuters)

President Bush imposed sanctions on North Korea, Myanmar and Cuba on Wednesday for failing to do enough to stop the trafficking of people forced into servitude or the sex trade.

The war-ravaged countries of Liberia and Sudan also failed to meet U.S. standards and are subject to sanctions. But the White House said providing them with some aid was "in the national interest of the United States."

In Sudan's case, the White House said assistance would be "limited to that which may be necessary to implement a peace accord."

The United States already has sweeping sanctions in place on North Korea, Myanmar and Cuba, so the new ones should have minimal effect. An administration official said Bush's announcement could translate into further travel restrictions, and may bring to an end some educational and cultural exchanges. ---

The United States is developing plans for sanctions against North Korea if it continues to develop nuclear weapons, US officials say.

The sanctions would include halting its weapons shipments and cutting off money sent there by Koreans living in Japan.

The officials said there were no plans to push for the sanctions to be applied soon, because the Pacific allies of the US still opposed the idea and the United Nations Security Council was likely to remain focused on Iraq for weeks.

But the Pentagon and State Department are developing plans for sanctions, and perhaps other actions, so that the US has a forceful response ready in case North Korea takes aggressive new steps toward developing nuclear weapons, officials said.

North Korea has said it would consider sanctions an act of war.

3. Well this ought to win friends
and influence people. It'll starve
the people and the infrastructure
just like it did to Iraq. Then 12
years later we can go in and rebuild
everything with another $200 billion
paid for by American tax payers. Oh
I forgot...the bill will be passed
on to our grandchildren.

Thanks GW!

6. He had John Bolton from the State Department
publically announce the night before Jimmy Carter was to leave for Cuba that Cuba was involved in creating biological weapons. This floated around for awhile, Jimmy Carter took a tour through their labs, Fidel Castro invited Jimmy Carter to bring inspectors from anywhere he chose to go over their laboratories.

Jimmy Carter said that he had been briefed be State Department officials before his trip, and they hadn't admitted ANYTHING like this to him.

Later under questioning, (Bolton refused to attend the Senate inquiry) a lower State official claimed that Cuba had the POTENTIAL to create biological weapons.

Since their charge of WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION has fallen through, they are going with the always popular CUBAN NATIONAL SEX TRADE charge. Yeah, right.

9. Some related info. on their sex charge against Cuba
referring to a recent article published in Miami, by El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish version of the Miami Herald, written just their Cuban "exile" readers, a publication which has very little respect for the facts:

(snip) On August 25, El Nuevo Herald led with an incoherent and fact free story about Cuba selling underage girls for prostitution in Latin America. Earlier in August, The Herald also trumpeted that 3 Cuban gymnasts had defected at the Pan American games in Santo Domingo. They barely mentioned the 72 gold medals Cuban athletes won. Other recent Herald stories assert that Castro has lost his marbles because he seemed confused at a speech, that Greece denied Castro's application for a visa for the 2004 Olympic Games and that Elian Gonzalez, the little boy rescued off the Florida coast who was returned by the Clinton government to his father two years ago to the horror of the Castro-hating Cubans in Florida, has become Castro's "little puppet doll."

FIDEL AND THE PRINCE
Like the embargo itself and the various bills that tightened it, the new measures are directed against one man as if Castro was the lone resident of the island. Aside from the irrelevance of these stories to the issues of the world and the nation, they do demonstrate the ability of Fidel Castro to twist the brain of his opponents, -- as well represented by the Herald -- to reduce them to a cackling gang of fixated or obsessed harpies.
(snip/...)
