In a statement released Wednesday, PhRMA said that Tauzin will succeed current president and chief executive officer Alan Holmer as of January 3. Holmer had announced earlier that he planned to retire in early 2004.
Tauzin, a 13-term Republican congressman from Louisiana, had chosen not to seek reelection earlier this year. Shortly after that decision, he was diagnosed with intestinal cancer, a disease he has beaten with the help of advanced oncology drugs, he said in PhRMA's statement.
