Study Finds WTC Fires Spewed Toxic Gases for Weeks
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The burning ruins of the World Trade Center spewed toxic gases "like a chemical factory" for at least six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks despite government assurances the air was safe, according to a study released on Wednesday.

Coming on the 2nd anniversary, this is bad news for BushCo.

2. You could smell it for weeks all over the entire city
I was working on Wall st. at the time and had a nagging cough for weeks. I got laid off and stopped going down there and the cough stopped.

3. What a surprise
Why would any have believed otherwise? I'm in NJ and wouldn't have gone anywhere near the site. This was a fire unlike any other and the fuel was a witches brew of toxic materials.

I'm sorry it was our ex-governor giving the "it's all ok" message. She was such a puppet.

11. I moved away from downtown Jersey City on 9/8/01
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 03:10 PM by rocknation
across the Hudson River from the WTC area for the benefit of the geographically incorrect. I spent the morning of 9/11 waiting to have my phone installed--the technician showed up just in time to see the second plane hit. Two of my co-workers who still lived in downtown Jersey City weren't able to get home for three days. I spoke with my ex-landlord about three weeks later and she first thing she said was "Things are getting back to normal, but it still smells."

My oldest niece was in the area and saw the first plane go over her head. My oldest nephew worked for an engineering firm a few blocks away. He was in NJ on a sales call that day, but was back at the office once the "all clear" was given. Neither have shown any ill effects, but who knows what's going to happen a few years down the line? They were willing to risk the lives of other innocent New Yorkers because they didn't want to "scare" anybody, make the Pretzel-Dunce look bad, or incur insurance costs? The sacrifice of three thousand lives wasn't enough?

15. Why should they care?

The lives of ordinary people mean nothing to them.

But then if they could kill the three thousand at the WTC, why should they care about others. You'll have to forgive me, I used to be LIHOP, but I'd rather switch than fight. The problem is I learned to read, so now I'm firmly in the MIHOP camp

Laugh as you will. It's the only logical answer AFAIC.

7. Don't forget to rate this story a 5!
This was discussed a bit earlier today on CNN. Very scary stuff. Who is going to catch hell for this debacle? Can the White House and EPA pass the buck on this indefinitely?

8. Here's another good article from AJC

Given the unprecedented confusion that had engulfed New York and the rest of the nation, the EPA's apparent lapse in judgment is perhaps forgivable in retrospect and in isolation. But it continues a pattern in which the EPA has repeatedly disseminated information later revealed to have been doctored by Bush administration operatives in pursuit of political aims that conflicted with the agency's core mission. <snip>

"We didn't want to scare people," Whitman recently told Newsweek magazine. "We were not told to lie."

Let's hope not. There's nothing scarier in a democracy than officials who knowingly deceive citizens under the guise of "protecting" them.

10. so like the a-bombs, the toll continues to mount
in health costs, and lives lost. There was already a study showing notably lower birthweights for pregnancies in the surrounding areas.

13. Too bad Cheney and Bush won't be there tomorrow, In addition
to the lists of questions by the vitims families, all of New York could ask about this and the scrubbing of the EPA report.

Sleazy, slimy bastards, I don't think this will go away. Look how many families(I believe over 50%) have refused a settlement. I suspect it is not just the money they are refusing, it is the pack of bullshit lies that these bastards keep shoving down America's throats.

My thoughts and best wishes are with the people of New York whose lives mean so little to the Bush cartel.

14. The crime scene had to be scraped clean before...
...the trauma and confusion subsided. If the work had been halted due to health concerns, cooler heads might have had time to prevail. Coercing the EPA to lie about the dangers in and around Ground Zero ensured that the evidence would be disappeared forever.

16. Quickly and thoroughly scrubbed

“Some 185,101 tons of structural steel have been hauled away
from Ground Zero. Most of the steel has been recycled as per the
city's decision to swiftly send the wreckage to salvage yards in
New Jersey.

The city's hasty move has outraged many victims' families who
believe the steel should have been examined more thoroughly. Last
month, fire experts told Congress that about 80% of the steel was
scrapped without being examined because investigators did not
have the authority to preserve the wreckage.”
