WASHINGTON -- A tiny provision in a $12 billion tax bill is causing concern for Bush administration officials who fear it might open the door for private social groups to receive charitable donations.
The item permits tax-advantaged charitable donations to groups that provide student housing at colleges and universities. Fraternities, sororities and other groups that provide student housing stand to benefit.
House lawmakers, who worked the item into a bill aimed at encouraging more charitable giving that the House Ways and Means Committee approved Tuesday, said the groups need help building new dormitories, repairing aging buildings and upgrading safety features. It has support from both Republicans and Democrats.
