Bush plans to visit Germany

President George Bush is to visit Germany at the end of February, the government in Berlin announced yesterday, in a trip designed to heal the US-German rift over Iraq.

Mr Bush will fly to Brussels on February 22 for Nato and EU summit talks. German officials said he would then fly to Britain where he would meet both Tony Blair and the French president, Jacques Chirac, before flying to Germany.

They said Mr Bush would not visit Berlin because of the likelihood of huge anti-war demonstrations. Instead, he would meet Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in another town, yet to be announced.

The visit appears to mark a breakthrough in US-German relations after a long period of enmity. Mr Bush last visited Germany in May 2002, but, months later, the two sides fell out when Mr Schröder criticised the US decision to invade Iraq.

We do not want Europe to be involved in this criminal activity!

On many levels, United States policy represents a great danger to the planet:
Disarmament (development of new nuclear weapons; Iraq; Landmine treaty; new nuclear tests;...)
Human Rights (International Criminal Court; torture in prisons; attacks on civil rights in the United States, ...)
Environment (Kyoto Protocol; WTO dispute on use of GMO's, ...)


Protests are planned on Monday 21st February at 5pm in front of the United States embassy in Brussels. During the visit, on Tuesday 22nd February, a colourful protest will take place in Brussels. The time and location will be announced later. A number of groups continue to call for an economic boycott of selected US products in opposition to Bush's policies.

The following organisations are taking the initiative in calling for these protests: For Mother Earth, Vrede vzw, Bond Beter Leefmilieu, Greenpeace, Stop USA, CNAPD and Forum voor Vredesactie. They expect many more organisations to join the call for nonviolent protests in the coming months.

Heidelberg is located in the neighborhood of many cities with 200k-500k inhabitants and mainly liberal universities (Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Mannheim, Ludwigshafen etc).
Although Heidelberg itself is considered a relatively conservative city, it would be easy to organize huge demonstrations against Bush.
If he nethertheless decides to meet with Schröder in Heidelberg, i'll be there :)

According to government sources, Bush won't come to Berlin. He will instead visit a place of "symbolic meaning", very likely in the eastern part of Germany.

The US administration named Frankfurt (Oder) - near Berlin and not to mix up with the banking city in Hesse - as their favourite destination. The place is very close to the Polish border and therefore highly symbolic: Poland's admission to the European Union was celebrated there this May.

The town is also ideal for their purposes. Most people who want to go there will have to pass Berlin. So by controlling the automobile and railroad traffic from Berlin, Frankfurt can easily be shut off from the rest of the republic.
