ISN SECURITY WATCH (20/12/04) - Thousands of Pakistani opposition supporters protested in Islamabad yesterday, demanding that the country’s military president make good on his promise to shed his military uniform in order to return legitimacy to the presidency. The protests came after Pakistani military dictator General Pervez Musharraf announced on Friday that he would not shed his military uniform by the end of the year as he had earlier pledged.

1. Ah, yes, the MMA.
That bastion of freedom and enlightenment.

"Al-Qaeda doesn't exist", and then they find people that confess to working with Al-Qaeda being hosted by regional MMA officials.

2. Why bother about the MMA and other nasty details?
A Manichean worldview is so much more fun...

3. But, but, but, "military presidents" are just so "IN" these days,...
,...doncha' know.

Moreover, despotic presidents are never held to a pledge or promise.

Bush is a perfect example.

5. Things are indeed heating up!

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — They burned effigies of President Bush. They shouted "Long live Osama bin Laden." They vowed a jihad, or holy war, against both America and the Pakistani government. Stormy protests Thursday by hundreds of Islamic militants on the streets of Peshawar, not far from the Afghan border, came a day after Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf addressed the nation to seek backing for his decision to offer Washington "full support" for a possible attack on neighboring Afghanistan.

....and on another note Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - regarded as the real architect of the Iraqi war and its aftermath - said on Thursday that 'the Syrians have been shipping killers into Iraq to try and kill Americans', adding: 'We need to think about what our policy is towards a country that harbours terrorists or harbours war criminals.

'There will have to be change in Syria, plainly,' said Wolfowitz.

Washingtom intelligence sources claim that weapons of mass destruction that Saddam was alleged to have possessed were shipped to Syria after inspectors were sent by the United Nations to find them.

6. According to protesters, Musharraf is threatening Pakistan with secularism
"Qazi Hussain, who also heads Jamaat-i-Islami, alleged that the president was distorting the teachings of Islam and had embarked on an agenda to make the country secular. This, he claimed, was in conformity with the US plans to make Pakistani people adopt Western values and abandon Islamic tenets. "

8. "Western values",...
,...what is that? Is it pro-corporate/fascism or pro-democracy/secularism?

That's the weird thingy.
