Bush shows caution about plunging into Mideast peacemaking

WASHINGTON -- President Bush called for realism and took the long view Monday on Mideast peacemaking and development of democracy among Palestinians.

Bush welcomed efforts by British Prime Minister Tony Blair to travel to the region this week and make plans for a conference to help develop a Palestinian state.

But he did not commit the United States to attend. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said "we will not participate, but we understand its importance."

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Sens. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and Mark Dayton of Minnesota, announced plans to travel to the area. The two Democrats will visit Israel, Jordan and Iraq.
