Fastest growth found in 'red' states

"Robust population growth continues to sweep the nation's Southern and Western states, according to estimates released Wednesday by the Census Bureau.

If the trend continues at its current pace, states in the Northeast and Midwest that have been population powerhouses since the 19th century will lose their dominance to Sun Belt states by 2010."

"Seats in the House of Representatives are reallocated every 10 years to reflect population shifts. The next round will come after the 2010 Census.

Based on the latest population estimates, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana each would lose a House seat, according to Kim Brace, president of Election Data Services, a Washington D.C., consulting firm that specializes in the Census and redistricting. Arizona, Florida, Texas and Utah each would gain a seat, he says.

'It's the New America," Frey says. 'It's taking population and political clout from the highly urbanized Old America.'"

Is that Blue staters are moving to these other states. Arizona, NM, NC and others are getting bluer.

Red states can turn purple or even blue. Especially AZ and FL.

One neglected problem - the 2000 Census significantly under-counted minorities and statistical corrections were rejected. I have no idea how many House seats and Electoral Votes that cost us due to mis-apportionment.

As will the energy demands for air conditioning. I don't know how much I would trust simple population projections that do not take environmental factors into account.
