Navy Concludes That Secrets Aboard Spy Plane Were Comprised by Chinese
By Robert Burns
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - The crew of a Navy spy plane that landed on China's Hainan Island in April 2001 after colliding with a Chinese fighter jet did not destroy all classified materials aboard, and it is "highly probable" that some fell into Chinese hands, Navy investigators concluded. The report, which was released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by Jane's Defense Weekly, blamed the Chinese fighter pilot for the collision and did not fault the Navy crew for failing to complete the destruction of classified information aboard the EP-3....the report did not address the possible impact of any compromise of official secrets.... "destruction of all classified materials onboard did not occur," and concluded that "compromise by the People's Republic of China of undestroyed classified material on PR-32 is highly probable and cannot be ruled out." <snip>

2. Gee, I wonder if the Russians got a look-see, too?
The Chinese wouldn't give the plane back to us directly, even after Chimpy apologized, remember? He had to ask Pooty-Poot to get the pieces back for us.

Not that that had anything to do with the September 11 attacks a few months later, so stop saying that! It was Clinton's weaknesses in jailing the WTC bombers from 1993 and stopping the millennium attacks in their tracks that convinced Al Qaida that the U.S. was weak.

3. I thought this was ancient news?
I remember them worrying about all sorts of compromised secret stuff, not the least of which was the Chinese going over every inch of the plane. Lots of good stuff on a spy plane. I wonder if they still use crypto machines and the Chinese got their hands one of the latest models? I don't think we've ever lost one before.

What's the standing order for a spy plane about to ditch in foreign territory? Seems like the crew would be under some sort of drastic orders to make sure no one gets their hands on the plane.

I also remember the bleating about the tortured and terrified POWs that crewed the plane, who at the time were being put up in a local hotel and being treated to the best General Cho's chicken they ever had while the Chinese were laughing their asses off over the whole thing.

19. What they should have done.
The hightech stuff has holders where you're supposed to put the thermite grenades and pull the pin before exiting aircraft. Personally, I would have taken leftover thermite grenades and put them over the fuel tanks before hitting the door. Of course you'd have to know they would let you leave the aircraft, otherwise you'd go up with it.

None of us was there, but still, I can't help but think that once they knew they could leave the aircraft, they would have had time to use the grenades. They should have left nothing but a black mark on the ground.

4. No Shir, Shetlock?
I wonder what the first clue was? Maybe the fact the had it in their possession for weeks? Or that it was dismantled? Or what?

7. I can neither confirm nor deny...
since I don't 'do' crypto work, but I sure hope so.

Always assume that your stuff is compromised whenever the enemy has any access to your stuff; safer that way.

14. if you read" proceedings"
you know it takes the navy along time to digest info, sort it out ,and then make a conculsion of what happened and how bad. seems it takes months just for simple problems to be sorted out. the best and funnist example was when a russian mig flew over the flight deck of a us carrier in the china seas..the russians then e`mailed the picture to the carrier...it seems that the us didn`t notice that the russians were flying different routes the day it happened...shit hit the fan to say the least.

5. BUSH LOSES TOP SECRET INFO TO CHINESE
...If you replace "Bush" with "Clinton" this would have been the Drudge headline if this had occurred anytime between 1/1993 and 1/2001.

11. Ah - the "suitcase" A-bomb Reagan got in 83 and China got specs to in 84
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 07:35 PM by papau
I wonder if we'd admit to the Reagan A-bomb transfer if the Chinese had not been so proud of copying it that they went and published the detail of the -now Chinese - suitcase A bomb in 87 in a journal that science folks not in the secrets game in the US all recieved?

The US media still pretends it did not happen despite all the written, on the net, papers, about the 87 surprise - and the US gov admission that it happened. We just can not talk about it lest it affect a GOP'er's ability to get elected - we must repeat rumors - uncritically - that the NRC puts out - but not note the facts - only give the Dem 10 words to say he knows not about what the GOP is screaming about.

And God forbid a little outrage about treason if that can not be attributed to just reporting what a Dem said w/ a GOP denial that is twice as long. Our media is not into truth because that might be "making news" - not "reporting news".
