Anger builds over EPA’s 9-11 report
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 05:50 PM by dArKeR
Two years after the World Trade Center attacks, New Yorkers say they’re outraged by reports that the White House influenced the Environmental Protection Agency to downplay hazards posed by the toxic dust that fell in an avalanche over the city. The EPA’s acting chief defends the agency’s actions after the attacks, saying it hopes to be better prepared for “the next time.”

“I PRAY TO God that, as a country, in the event of another terrorist attack, God forbid, we as an agency would be equipped to get the data analyzed and posted to the public,” EPA Acting Administrator Marianne Horinko told MSNBC in an exclusive interview. “All that was a huge challenge to us on 9/11 — coordinating communication among agencies, following incident command. God forbid there is a dirty bomb. I hope everyone knows their battle stations.”
In the early days and weeks of the World Trade Center disaster, says Horinko, there was such chaos that mistakes were inevitably made.
“Did we rush out (too soon) with data? On balance, I think we used our best professional judgment in an atmosphere where people were clamoring for answers.” But the agency wasn’t trying to deceive the public, she claims.

However, a report by the EPA’s Office of the Inspector General released on Aug. 21 states, among other criticisms, that the White House reviewed and even changed EPA statements about public health risks to make them sound less alarming. The report charges that the White House Council on Environmental Quality influenced “the information EPA communicated to the public through its early press releases when it convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones.” The report cites “reopening Wall Street” and “national security” as reasons for the spin.

‘WE WERE ALL LIED TO’

If God did intervene in Earth's events the first thing he'd do is exile The Bush Crime Family and the GOP Crime Family and The Conservative Christian Crime Family to HELL!

23. The EPA Inspector General said
Exactly what the EPA Inspector HEAD wanted him or her to. If they weren't told to lie, as Christine Whitman claims, it's because they didn't NEED to be told to lie!

10. Rutty was drinking the chalice of WTC victim's blood. I've never seen a
more disgusting politician in my life. And the Whore Media ate the flesh hosts of the WTC victims for the way they promoted Rutty during this time. I only saw 1 or 2 Newsweek reports saying how Rutty was using his appereances at 9/11 events, (with other GOP politicians), as a political war chest to call upon them when he (Rutty) runs for office on the next political cycle. Like when a mafia has a new member murder a person in front of the other mafia members so that they own you for the rest of your life.

I can't believe all those Whore pictures published of Rutty smiling while he's pimping his book around the country.

Surely Rutty is the most disgusting/slut in America, (with a brain), who whored politiical benefit from the deaths of our citizens.

Surely Bush is the most disgusting/slut in America, (without a brain), who whored politiical benefit from the deaths of our citizens.

5. Were they trying to decieve the public...
In so much as they were making happy talk about safety in the absence of real critical evidence, yes.
This is a far worse invocation of linguistic niceness than predicating your answer on the precise definition of 'is'.

Manhattan is going to be for mesothelioma research what Hiroshima was for radiation treatment. If we let Halliburton off the asbestos hook then shame on us.

Make no mistake, the EPA, an by extension, members of the Bush administration will be held accountable for Billions.

We can't even get the courts to order the records opened on Cheney's Energy Task Force.

12. Oh, well if we were ALL lied to
Then it's nobody's fault, and nobody can be blamed, right?

Look for the spread of pulmonary and lung problems to crop up in Queens and Brooklyn in the next five to ten years, and on up the East Coast during the next 20. Experts in asbestos exposure can probably draw a pretty accurate chart for the incredibly depressing and predictable spread of disease from this catastrophe.

And the corrupt Bush administration lied about it. For what reason? To project a sense of calm and resolute duty in the immediate aftermath? Well, those people who die by the hundreds and then by the thousands will do so individually, quietly, and piecemeal. So Bush and his administration couldn't care less, as long as they put on a good appearance way back when.

13. I just watched two ladies on CNN
They live close to the 9/11 site and they were both suffering from terrible respiratory problems. They had their living spaces checked for contamination and the spaces failed miserably-- all types of chemical pollutants were discovered at extremely elevated levels. They were pretty pissed off and could not believe that the mayor is still sticking by the original story of the air quality being safe.

14. Think this might have something
to do with them not going to NY to milk 9/11 further. I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to change venues for their convention, don't think they'll be too popular there. On the other hand, it will make for some VERY interesting photos.

15. Change of Venue Risks Admission of Failure
I can imagine the RNC is churning up a good case of ulcers over this situation. If they choose to keep the convention in NYC, they risk a repeat of Chicago 1968 -- there will be more war causalties by then, more billion dollar requests for money for the war on terror, more car bombs overseas and maybe in the US, and more cases of pulmonary disease among New Yorkers. They can expect large crowds of protesters and will have to bully Bloomberg into using the NYPD and maybe even the National Guard to protect the delegates, ala the WTO protests.

The other option is to move to friendlier territory like Miami or Long Beach, but I suspect even that won't insure them a peaceful coronation of King George. And to move the convention will reveal their vulnerabilities.

So, I'd expect them to keep the NYC venue with the convention center surrounded by block wide cordons of police and National Guard. They will attempt to downplay the numbers and portray the protesters as unpatriotic and tools of the Democrats. I'd also guess that any references to 9/11 will be muted, downplayed or eliminated altogether if they sense that the mode of city will turn against them.

It's a gamble, but I'd wager that Karl Rove and the neocons are determined to exert their will over what they regard as weak, ineffectual opposition. They did it with the war. They'll do it with the convention, putting the best spin on whatever materializes.

The real question in my mind is will the New York Times have the courage to reassert its journalist integrity and continue to show the kind of courage they demonstrated by their recent editorial attack on the character of the president.

The job of the opposition -- and I don't just mean partisan Democrats -- is to throw as many unexpected "monkey wrenches" into their well oiled schemes as possible.

Getting Dick Cheney "uninvited" to the "Ground Zero" ceremony today was a great example. New Yorkers have every right to be furious with this Administration and I hope that one year from now, they haven't forgotten how duplicitous this bunch of corporate criminals and political stooges have been.

Hate to admit it, but I haven't been to a "protest" since they reinstated registration, but I've been thinking New York in '04 for several weeks now. Haven't told the wife yet, though I sense she's ready too.

20. This could be the end of the line for the
Bush crime cabal. We need to keep this story out there. After all the posturing and photooping by Bush and Cheney after 9-11 the realization that they scrubbed the EPA report endengering the very people they were touting as heroes in extraordinarily damning.

IMHO, it makes LIHOP and the Iraqi lies so believable.

Most in the US don't want to believe that the government would DELIBERATELY harm them, this proves that thet would and indeed, did.
