US commander says 'clear' more troops needed in Mosul for Iraqi poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The senior US military commander for Iraq (news - web sites), General John Abizaid, said that more US troops will be needed to patrol the northern city of Mosul during the January 30 election.


"It's clear that Mosul will need additional boots on the ground during the election period," Abizaid told CNN in an interview broadcast Sunday.


The US military is investigating how a suicide bomber on Tuesday managed to penetrate security at a US base in Mosul, targetting a mess hall in a strike that killed 22 people.


Fourteen US soldiers died in the attack, the deadliest single assault so far against US forces in Iraq.

2. US soldiers are amazing

In every report throughout this invasion, no matter where it is, soldiers have miraculously come back from the dead.

In Mosul for example...first it was 24 dead, then 22, then 20...and now I note it's down to 14.

Give it another week, and not one American will have been killed in the Mosul bombing.
