Dec. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The death toll rose above 14,000 after an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the world's biggest in four decades, caused tsunami waves that devastated coastal towns from Thailand to India.

Yesterday's magnitude 9.0 quake generated waves as high as 10 meters (33 feet) that struck tourist resorts in Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives. Sri Lanka reported more than 5,000 dead, while in Indonesia at least 4,448 were killed, prompting the governments of both countries to declare national disasters.

11. Tsunami death toll rises to 23,500

The death toll from the southern Asia earthquake rose dramatically today, with some reports estimating that 23,500 people died in Sunday's disastrous tidal wave.

Officials in Sri Lanka announced this morning that the death toll in the country had increased by 5,000 to 11,000.

good god, how crass can they get!?! I politely informed them that it's understood that tourism is the livelihood of many in that area, but now is not the time to bring up those sort of losses!

17. That the Maldives didn't have a greater death toll is amazing.

An island republic of nearly 1,200 islands, the highest point in the entire country is about 8'. The indigenous population of around 330,000 is supplemented by many thousands of tourists - it's a world class scuba diving destination. Their foresight in building a blasted coral seawall around the capitol island may have saved hundreds if not thousands of lives.

Their death toll (so far) is estimated at about 30-35 with 50-60 more listed as missing.
