China baulks at US Iraq plan

China has said it will support proposals put forward by France, Germany and Russia to reduce the political role of the United States and Britain in Iraq. It comes after the Europeans and Russia submitted amendments to a US draft resolution seeking a multinational force for Iraq.

The United States says the UN should play a role in preparing for a new Iraqi government but it seeks to keep political control in the hands of its Coalition Authority until elections are held. The proposed amendments would give a much greater role to the UN and the Iraqi Governing Council and speed up the path to elections. On Wednesday, US President George W Bush called on the Security Council to act quickly and approve a new resolution on Iraq.

Price to pay -China has again aligned itself with the countries which led the opposition to a US attack on Iraq before the war in March. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said: "As to the proposals of the French, Russia and German parties, we support them." The separate Franco-German and Russian amendments broadly support America's plea for a multinational force to help strengthen security in Iraq. As the price of their acceptance, the French and Germans say the UN should "immediately" take the lead in paving the way to "full restoration of Iraqi sovereignty". Russia calls for the UN "to strengthen its role in Iraq" and for a timetable to be drawn up leading to elections. <snip>

The draft resolution will be discussed by the five permanent members of the Security Council with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Geneva on Saturday.

3. They are going to keep on vetoing everything that

crosses the table with the word "Iraq" on it. Hell, that's what I would do. Shrubbo* got STERN and EXPLICIT warning. A change of leadership in Washington isn't going to help the situation either as far as UN help in Iraq is concerned.

Bottom line is that the rest of the world does not exist for the purpose of cleaning up after anybody.

+++ The USA needs to get Iraq fixed up a.s.a.p. to win over the Iraqi heart and mind and establish the 'mecca' of democracy so all the other ME countries can fall in line - like magic. By the time we have the BIG WAR, I am so sure that Jordan, Oman, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, even the Palestinians, UAE, etc. etc. will be joining us in our War for American Freedom. Where's my flag? 7. Actually there was a thread earlier this morning

in Foreign Affairs that suggested that Islamic militants are an increasingly powerful force in the secret police in Pakistan. This article implied that Mushrafaf (sp?) may not be able to control Pakistan.

The article suggested that we cannot count on Pakistan as an ally in the long term.

9. Pakistan

Pakistan is the most 'covered up' threat in the region. They have hundreds of thousands of Pashtus (Taliban-types) who are the core of Al Qaeda. I hate using that word.

They are part of international Wahabi-backed army. How's that. The fact that Al Qaeda is a CIA test tube baby always makes me hesitate.

Israel's cosying up to India is interesting. They have similar objectives. This is leaving Pakistan out of the loop.

But Pakistan has the big BOMB. And it's a dictatorship under Musharraf - he's no more elected than Hussein. That's a fact.

Should be interesting. To see how it is played out.
