Pipeline Blown Up (1/1/05, south of Baghdad)

Saboteurs blew up an oil pipeline south of Baghdad today, causing a huge fire.

The attack was near the Musabayb electricity station in the Bahbahan area some 46 miles south of Baghdad. Explosives were used to destroy the pipeline linking the southern cities of Karbala and Hilla.

A huge blaze broke out after the blast sending up thick, black billowing smoke.

Insurgents have regularly targeted Iraq’s oil infrastructure, repeatedly cutting exports and denying the country much-needed reconstruction money.

the reason why they are the cause of Iraq being denied restoration money? We invaded them WRONGFULLY. The money is theirs, period.

that a large part of the insugency isn't "freedom fighters" but a cynical bunch of warlords who would rather run a ruined Iraq than see it prosper once again and actually have to work for a living.

The insurgency has one common goal: get the US and its allies out of Iraq. After this, many of the numerous groups have different aims. Most are just fed up with America's actions and want a free Iraq, not with the US's hand in its future. Just about everyone wants jobs, electricity, roads, security, water and dignity.
Most of the resistance are nationalists. Some are fundamentalists. Some are fighting for their own immediate needs, others are fighting for larger goals.
Let this be very clear to you: The mentality that you are referring to is that some parts of the resistance would rather destroy Iraq in resistance than submit it to a foreign invader and oppressor (like captains who go down with a ship). Secondly, Iraq is NOT going to prosper with the US ruling over it. Nothing has been done to help any situation there. Lastly, they do not want to work while an invading force rapes and uses their country and people. Also, THERE IS NO WORK IN IRAQ! 60% of the country is unemployed (thanks to the actions of the US), so they could not work even if they wanted to (which is something they want to achieve by overthrowing the US occupation).

If he really wanted to help the Iraqis as much as he claims he does he would be over there with a gun doing his part you know? But then as most people realize, Friedman is full of hot air. All talk. No walk. Lot of people like that.

15. I didn't think this idea that America was going to use the Iraqis oil...

...to rebuild the Iraqis country after America blew it the fuck up had much chance of success right from the get go. I was really skeptical of the whole idea. I guess if the Iraqis had fallen for it that would have been really great. But they have not fallen for it. :( I think it may be time to consider Plan-B. If there is a Plan-B?
