Scientists demanded warning system two years ago

LEADING scientists have spent the past two years lobbying the United Nations for a tsunami warning system for the Indian Ocean. The governments of Indonesia and Australia, worried about a series of smaller earthquakes off Java, felt the region needed a tidal wave warning system similar to that used in the Pacific.

The two tectonic plates which caused the earthquake near Sumatra on Boxing Day had crunched together in 1797, 1833 and 1861, and scientists knew another catastrophic event was inevitable.
Dr Phil Cummins, of Australia’s Geoscience Agency, pushed the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to accept a system was needed for the Indian Ocean. But last week’s tsunami struck before he could present his case.

Cummins told Scotland on Sunday last night he thought it would have taken years to get approval from Unesco and other governments in the region. But while the bureaucratic process was lengthy, he said he had not believed a tsunami threat was imminent.

Unesco oversees the International Coordinating Group for Tsunami Warning Systems in the Pacific, known as ITSU, but the group has no remit to operate in the Indian Ocean. Both Australia and Indonesia felt a warning system was needed for the region and wanted to convince Unesco it should let ITSU operate in the Indian Ocean as well.

There's a volcano on the Canary island of La Palma that will drop half a trillion tons of rock into the ocean. That will create a wave estimated to be over 600 meters high. Basically, you can kiss the cities on the eastern seaboard and much of the Carribean goodbye.

It could happen anytime in the next 1,000- but there will probably be warnings of an impending eruption before the event. Not that it matters all that much, considering the massive scale of the event.

Well, for starters, the US needs a system for NYC and Houston.
The Truman top tax rate, ninety percent would instantly add 2. 7 Trillion to the fed budget, every year. Enough for both warning systems.. here and India, ifthey totalled one Billon. With 2. 6 Trillion left over.

Use that to end US poverty, hunger, homelessness and double the NIH, cutting in half the time for all cures to be found.. cost 346 Billion.

5. Problem with the warning system

is there are so many false alarms that people soon disregard it.
Most folks in Hawaii consider it a joke.
Much like the color code terrorist warnings.

6. Problem: something that has to be accomplished or answered

Im sure it has some kinks. I would rather put money towards refining a system that could save thousands of lives, than see my tax dollars be used for policies this Administration seems to profit from primarily due to destruction of economies, property and loss of lives.
