Iraqi and U.S. military spokesmen said Sunday an explosion killed 16 Iraqi National Guards and injured seven others north of Baghdad.
CNN reported 20 dead -- 18 soldiers, a civilian woman and the bomber.
The spokesmen said an explosive device blew up as a convoy of 30 members of the National Guard was passing on a road in Balad, 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the capital.
They also said that two polling stations set up for the Jan. 30 elections in Abu Ujail in northern Iraq were attacked by unidentified gunmen, but no one was reported hurt.
Eyewitnesses said they saw the civilian guards of the two buildings being arrested after they were attacked.
