Pro Democracy Count Every Vote Rally, Monday, January 3

2:00 PM, Capitol Theater, 77 S. High Street, Columbus, OH

Columbus, OH - (Jan 2, 2005) – Tim Carpenter, Director of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), announced that a coalition of grassroots organizations from across the nation, would hold a mass “Pro Democracy Count Every Vote Rally,” in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, January 3, 2005.

The rally, which will be held at the Capitol Theater, 77 S. High Street, across from Ohio State Capitol, begins at 2:00 PM. Coalition partners include Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, MoveOn.org, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, the anti-war coalition United for Peace and Justice, PDA, Ohio State Senator Joyce Beatty, CASE Ohio and others.

“The vote recount in Ohio is underway," stated Reverend Jesse Jackson. "The election challenge lawsuit has been filed, subpoenas are being prepared, and depositions are being planned. Hearings spearheaded by Congressman John Conyers are bringing forth new evidence of voter machine manipulation, and now Senator John Kerry has joined in the recount fight. We must have a thorough investigation of voter irregularities and the voter machines before Congress certifies the Electoral College vote on January 6th…Forty years ago, the Voting Rights Act was passed as a result of an independent, mass civil rights movement. We will carry forward that tradition in 2005, and continue the fight to count every vote and make sure every vote counts.”

“This will be the first of two very public rallies,” Carpenter noted. “We also plan on being present and in solidarity with many of these same groups in Washington DC on January 6th, the day Congress is scheduled to certify the vote.”

10. I don't think this is going anywhere.

50% of each county's Board of Elections is made up of Democrats. How come none of them are on this bandwagon? Could it be that they know something that we have yet to figure out? I've spoken with the Democrat who chairs the Hamilton County (Cincinnati area) Board of Elections when I saw him at the grocery. He said it was fair.

All indications that I've seen point to a legitimate Shrub win in Ohio. Sometimes, I feel that many of my comrades here at DU are so incredibly anti-bush that we see outcome changing fraud where there is none. 50% of each Board of Elections is Democratic. Ken Blackwell is partisan, but he didn't change any election, he doesn't have the power to. I think that we are losing voters over this. They see some of us shrieking about fraud and stolen elections that probably didn't happen. To them, maybe we seem like nutcase conspiracy theorists. On this issue, we are so far out of the mainstream that we can't even see the water. I am unlucky enough to be stuck in Ohio for some time. I moved up here from Kentucky to follow work. I figure that I might as well get knowledgable about Ohio Politics while I'm here. Listen, Bush won Ohio, and it was legit. From the mouth of the Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman/Hamilton County Board of Elections Chairman, Bush won legitimately. I don't know, I wish I could see fraud. I wish that I could honestly believe that Kerry really won, but I can't...and that sucks.

15. Win/Lose is not the point.....

The main point, IMHO, is that the way we run elections in this country is rife with bias and/or corruption. Thousands have been disenfranchised nationwide, and we are moving toward a system where no accurate recounts /verification of actual votes can be made. Maybe this particular election was not "stolen", but the votes of many thousands of Americans have and the future is bleak. The system needs to be fixed, NOW!

I know that there weren't enough machines, but what else? I also know that the lack of machines can't be blamed on the Republicans or the Democrats, since the bi-partisan county BOEs choose the machines and the locations.

17. First of all, it's not just Ohio.....

you have to look at the problems nationwide. As for the lack of machines, you will note that there were many instances of poor minority precincts having too few machines, causing long, long waits while nearby upper class precincts had more than enough. Working folks, particularly poor working folks, don't have the luxury of waiting on line for hours on end. Then there is the problem of paperless ballots, leaving no paper trail to verify machine totals. Machines of this type are becoming more prevalent. The list goes on and on, though I suspect from your statement/question you don't see any problems at all. Curious.

I, personally, viewed no problems. In this area of the State, the newsmedia reported no major problems, only a few minor ones.
