Government officials would never put it so bluntly, but that's the message implicit in their low-key response to the latest suspected case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Even if the new case is confirmed, it's not expected to delay the announced reopening of the U.S. border to Canadian cattle. That reflects a big change in thinking since May 2003 when the discovery of a single case closed the border.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration was given advance warning of the suspected case and proceeded with the reopening announcement anyway, said Gary Little, a veterinarian with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

As for the prescription drugs, I always understood that there was a good chance it wouldn't last forever because we have to ensure a supply for Canadians.

Written by a Pulitzer Prize winner, it presents a strong introduction to the topic of prion-related diseases, the progression of research since the 1940s, the behavior of the U.S. and British governments, etc. It's a bit dated as it was written in 1998 or so, but nonetheless a great place to get started:

8. I suspect that Canadian beef is safer than our own.

Can this be proved? I suspect that they invest more regulatory money and manpower per head. I generally believe that free trade with Canada is a good thing. Their labor laws and environmental regulations are more than adequate.

I've mostly given up on meat except poultry and seafood, and that too, very rarely.

12. Poultry is being fed animal by-products. I've stopped eating that,

and the only eggs I eat are from grain-fed chickens. Chickens and turkey have such short life spans, I think it possible they could be infected without showing any symptoms. I've read that even vegetables fertilized with infected bone meal are a problem. Ain't Agribusiness great!

the shit is everywhere.. up to 16% of all Alzheimer's patients in rest homes have CJD not Alzheimer's.. people are dying all aver the country with this stuff and it is being covered up.

9. I can't see the border being re-opened after this

The whole thing was political theater, so that Bush could claim to be a free trader, but not actually re-open the border. Not that this has much to do with public health - I think U.S. beef farmers would prefer to not have the competition, pure and simple. There is no way the border will re-open, in my opinion.

I'm sure mad cow disease has got to be widespread everywhere, not just in Canada.

You guys have brought up some good points on this thread.

If the beef industry can be bothered to buy up all the "mad cow" web names and search engine links there must be something really wrong.
