President Bush has tapped former Presidents Clinton and Bush to lead a nationwide charitable fund-raising effort for victims of the Asian tsunamis, the White House announced Monday.


The two men will lead an effort "to encourage the American people and American businesses to support, through private contributions, non-governmental and international organizations" relief and reconstruction to areas devastated by the tsunamis, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

The president was announcing the effort in the White House's Roosevelt Room with the two former presidents at his side.

Afterward, Bush was paying brief visits to the embassies of the four nations — Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand — hit hardest by the disaster. Bush was to sign condolence books at each embassy, McClellan said.

crediblity in terms of having an interest in humanitarian undertakings after the first few days when they dissed Clinton, he made a couple of creepy statements, and obviously his crew wasn't paying that much attention as they came up with those tiny amounts of aid....even Campbell Brown called it "insensitive."

I think this works in Bush's favor far more than it reminds people of Clinton's abilities.

for his misadventures in Iraq and I can imagine that there are many areas of the world that any Bush would travel in that wouldn't be safe...so they need Clinton.

It was figured that if Clinton went out on his own or with other Dems to lead a Relief Effort that it would look even worse than it has been looking. Clinton likes Poppy. Don't ask me why.

BTW Can't someone find that $18 Billion that went missing from the Iraq coffers and use that money for the Relief Fund?

'spoiled Hollywood liberals'. I saw a brief portion of the press conference with the 2 Bushes and Bill, and even Poppy kept nodding when Clinton spoke. He's a great fundraiser and is truly empathic when it comes to other peoples' suffering. He was involved with Bob Dole in collecting funds to build the WW2 memorial, and when I saw them interviewed, Dole said something like 'don't thank me; President Clinton's the one who got people to donate.' A few days of Clinton working the phones will just embarass Bush more, even if their goal was to exploit him.

Clinton continually outshone and outspoke daddy bush, who looked like a sourfaced prune for much of the time while Bill was speaking. While Bill talked in grand noble ideals, poppy kept saying how caring his son was and likening this tragedy and coming together to to the iraq war. Bill is smart to use this to subtly shine a light on their differences, as well as the overriding mission of helping these people.
