20. Funny you should assume he's a lousy worker

being protected by the forces of evil protectionism. All workers deserve to get at least one COL adjustment in four years. If the worker in question was a member of a strong union, as you suggest, he probably would have gotten four. Even the strongest union can't protect a worker who "singlehandedly company to it's knees through laziness and blunder."

The fact is, workers in today's new economy are increasingly getting screwed while their CEOs are living charmed lives. Don't you ever wonder why the government is so keen on contracting out it's workforce? It's so the workers can be let go when their salaries get too far above starting wages. Maybe you'll be the one let go sometime in the future. Good luck trying to find another job, especially when you get into your 40s and above!

and your husband not getting a COLA. Believe me, as a federal employee, I'm not running to the bank. A decade or so ago, congress passed a law to give us comparable pay for worth to the private sector and they have yet to fufill their end of the bargin. I have more education than your average school teacher and I make about 75% of their wages for comparable time on the job.

p.s. there is no longer job security in the federal workforce under Bush; the trade off some of us made when we made the choice to be a civil servant (income for long term security). Also, the cola usually just covers our increase in health insurance premiums (we pay for those).

24. Sorry about your situation, but I wasn't referring to you per se.

My message was more for the people who are in charge who give themselves more money every year, regardless of economic conditions and regardless of company earnings, while regular workers suffer.

I don't know what the deleted messages were, but my husband is not in a union and has never been in one. He's a GREAT and conscientious hard worker---his bosses even wish that they could pay him more, but they haven't been able to get as much work for the company in the past 4 yrs & profits have been way down, so they themselves have also taken cuts in what they pay themselves. Husband is 54 and has worked for this company for 15yrs. In this job market and economy (taking into consideration his age), he can't really be choosy and run off to another company in hopes of more $. We're just thankful, at this point, that he has his job. And, if it makes any difference to the troll, my husband has a white-collar management position in this company.

Isn't it wonderful to be anonymous on the web and cowardly run around making ill-informed comments about people that you know nothing about?

25. My mother worked at ....

Orlando NTC for 30 years when it was in the process of closing, the civilian (Civil Service) employees were given lists of possible jobs within the government. There was only 2 jobs that she that she was qualified for - one was in Subic Bay, PI and the other was in Gitmo. She didn't want to go to the Phillipines and being in Cuba is like being under house arrest (she knew several people who had transferred there). So she retired and now makes the princely sum of about $550 a month because when she first started she was in a lower pay grade.

Mr. Bush is well-aware of the increasing number of federal employees that are joining unions. The agency that monitors defense contracts is almost entirely unionized now.
