The Pentagon is going to cut $30 billion from its six-year spending plan, according to Defense Department documents.
The cut is significantly lower than expected last week, when newspapers reported a pending $10 billion a year cut.
The reductions include taking $10.5 billion from the Air Force's F/A-22 fighter, cutting the buy from 277 aircraft to 180; two ships from the Navy's new destroyer program, saving $2.5 billion and slowing the buy of the V-22 Osprey, a savings of $1.5 billion, among other cuts. The plan also calls for the retirement of the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier in 2006, reducing the fleet of carriers from 12 to 11.
