Seething Iraqi town buries guards shot by Americans

FALLUJA, Iraq, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Hundreds of angry Iraqis chanting "America is the enemy of God" began on Saturday burying 10 police and security guards shot by U.S. troops who mistook them for rebels fighting the American occupation. snip

"Last night, two of the injured guards died because of their severe injuries, so the total number of martyrs became 10," said General Raed Abdul Latif, who heads the U.S.-appointed police in Falluja.

Falluja residents were also mourning the death of a three-year-old girl who witnesses said was shot in the head by American soldiers during street fighting late on Friday.

The town has been a cauldron of hostility for U.S. forces, particularly since American troops shot dead at least 13 Iraqis -- said by locals to have been unarmed -- during a protest march in late April.

U.S. officials have acknowledged at least one death in an apparently mistaken clash with with Iraqi police near the Iraqi town of Fallujah, but officials are not yet confirming any other casualties. Local officials say at least nine people were killed in the incident, mostly Iraqi policeman and a Jordanian security guard who were chasing suspected bandits when they ran into U.S. forces.

That's the "US-appointed" chief cop's term? That's what "our" guy is calling em? Oh, gee, that doesn't seem like a very good sign. Not on the old "hearts 'n' minds" campaign trail, nope, not hardly.
