Washington - U.S. intelligence believes the voice recordings of Osama bin Laden and his chief deputy on a videotape released by al-Qaida this week were made separately, perhaps months apart, suggesting bin Laden may be ailing and the two men may not be together, as had been assumed.

The video, which shows bin Laden and his top aide, Ayman al-Zawahri, hiking on a rocky mountainside, may be 2 years old, according to an administration official and an intelligence source.

They both look healthy, contrary to reports that al-Zawahri had been seriously wounded and that bin Laden was ill and perhaps had been wounded.

"The tape contains what appears to be audio recordings dubbed over on dated video footage," said an administration official familiar with the CIA's analysis of the video.

"Do I think they were in the same room taping at the same time? I think it's unlikely," the official said.

... it was just a day or so ago that the CIA was saying that the tape was authentic, that this was proof positive that bin Laden was admitting responsibility for 9/11 (which hadn't been done by him previously), and released just in time for 9/11.

Now, it's spliced and edited, according to an unnamed "admininstration official."

If OBL were alive, believe me, he would have put out an authentic tape months ago. That would be the one thing that would hurt Bush the most.

7. To me, it was Criminals in Action doctoring the bin Laden tape

....by putting out a one- or two-year-old video, superimposing audio by UBL's deputy, and passing it off as the genuine--and recent!
It's amazing, but not amusing, as to how many people fall for this old trick....oh, the gullibilty of the American people! :shrug:

9. Bin Laden hardly matters anymore,

nothing will change with him in or out of the picture... someone is making tapes and reacting to US warmongering... this will continue until the US is able to play nice with the international community and stop stealing their resources.

All of the cable channels broke into their reporting to announce this crap as Breaking News with all of the ensuing fanfare. Now ask yourself this. How many times have these same stations reported this news even in passing, that it was nothing but a cut and paste job? Ø Thats how many times.
