Dems ask McAuliffe to remain party chair

WASHINGTON -- Senior Democrats are trying to persuade national Chairman Terry McAuliffe to continue his service as party chairman, especially if none of the current candidates gains momentum in the race to replace him.

About a half-dozen candidates are in the race and a couple of others are considering a run for the position. It will be filled in February at the Democratic National Committee's winter meetings.

McAuliffe met privately Wednesday with several Democratic senators on Capitol Hill, and was asked again to consider serving for another year or two, Democrats say. McAuliffe's response was not immediately known, but he has been cool to such overtures in the past.

Democratic senators reportedly at the meeting included Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York.

Another term for McAuliffe will spell the END of the Democratic party. He has been a disaster, and needs to be replaced ASAP. The same goes for that ineffectual Robert Shrum, Democratic strategist behind the "don't fight back, take the high road" strategy which worked "so well" for Gore and Kerry. Shrum and Terry Mac need to go, the sooner the better, and replaced by someone willing to take the fight to a different level.

Terry has only been good at fundraising, but then allowed over and over again the Republicans to define the terms of the fight. Stupid!

Most schools in this country NEVER had official school prayer, including the red states in the Midwest and Great Plains. If you believe that they did, you're falling prey to Republican propaganda.

Unlike me, most current parents of school-age children weren't even born when the Supreme Court decisions about required prayer in New York State and required Bible reading in Pennsylvania came down. The New York prayer rules stemmed from fear of Catholic and Jewish immigrants and were an attempt to impose Protestant views on immigrants' children.

I was twelve years old when those Supreme Court decisions were announced. A small portion of the population screamed, "They're taking God out of the schools!" The rest of the population said, "Huh? Who has prayer in school anyway?"

It didn't become a wedge issue until the Reagan administration decided to make it so. By that time, you had a generation of parents who didn't remember what it was like "before."

Ii don't want the Dems to pander to the right on this issue. I want them to TELL THE TRUTH about it.

The DLC (founded and funded by conservatives) has done such a wonderful job of turning the party into repug-lite under the guise of moving us to the center, that I think it impossible to save it at this point.

Most, if not all, of the party leaders are now either DLCers or so afraid of the right that they just bend over to appease them.

Some of us saw this coming with Clinton, who made a big show of supporting all the social Dem policies while pushing thru NAFTA and all the other conservative economic policies that the DLC was created to enact.

There is one thing we must face, and until we do there is nothing that will take bush and his like out of power. We must face the fact that there is no longer a democratic party.

Let me ask you all a question. What is the purpose of the democratic party? Is it to get elected no matter who we have to emulate? Or is it to support the working people of this country, and make sure that there is some equality of opportunity between us and the power structure? If it's the second choice we certainly are NOT represented by the current democratic power elite. So just *who* do they represent?
