BAGHDAD, Iraq - A roadside bomb killed seven American soldiers Thursday night in northwest Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

The soldiers were on patrol when their Bradley fighting vehicle hit the bomb. Everyone inside the Bradley was killed.


The military said the names of the dead were being withheld until their families can be notified.


The deaths brought the number of U.S. troops killed since the beginning of the Iraq (news - web sites) war in March 2003 to 1,349, according to an Associated Press count. That figure included an American Marine killed in action Thursday in the volatile western Anbar province.

40. I believe this is unprecedented

I think this is the first time that an IED attack has inflicted so many casualties that were fatalities. Usually these IED attacks are said to kill three soldiers at the most, and one or two (if any) most often. Even back before they started armoring the Humvees more it was usually about one per attack - these one-a-day deaths were what kept the fatalities rolling in during the summer of 2003 on through early 2004.

Something different has to have happened here - an attack on a dismounted patrol rather than a convoy, for example, or a much larger explosive than is typically used. Maybe an "unassailable" Stryker that was carrying passengers was hit.

Makes you wonder how many more of these we will see between now and January 30th (and on after that point.)
