Insurgent Admits Iran, Syria Links on Tape

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- An Iraqi militant suspected of involvement in beheadings and other bloody attacks told Iraqi authorities that his group has links with Iran and Syria, according to a tape aired Friday by an Arabic TV station funded by the U.S. government.

Moayad Ahmed Yasseen, leader of Jaish Muhammad, which is Arabic for Muhammad's Army, was captured nearly two months ago in Fallujah, the former guerrilla stronghold west of Baghdad.

Alhurra television, which has its headquarters in Washington, said the tape of his purported confession was made Dec. 24 and provided to the station by Iraq's Ministry of Defense.

Iraqi and U.S. officials, including President Bush, have accused Syria and Iran of meddling in Iraq's affairs and aiding insurgents, a charge both nations vehmently deny. Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said last week that Iraq's patience was running out with countries that support the insurgency.

... Syria is significantly shy of oil--it's almost dry now. It's destined to become a net importer in just a few years--certainly fewer than ten, and their economy is quite shaky.

But, Syria still has a military presence in the northern half of Lebanon. Getting rid of that aids the Israelis. A substantial reason for Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon was ostensibly to prevent rocket attacks on northern Israel, but the real reason was to control water--most of the water coming into the area around Hebron comes from Lebanon.

The other US argument against Syria is that its leadership has strong familial and tribal ties to the former Sunni leadership of Iraq. There's probably a school of thought among the civilians in the Pentagon that they all have to be eradicated.

Iran's another matter, entirely.

Still, this article doesn't seem to make strong distinctions between help coming from inside Iran and Syria, and formalized assistance from the Syrian and Iranian governments, and that's a distinction that clouds the issue considerably.

... they are about propaganda.... I've been doing some research for a project and the neo-cons that invaded the Ford White House in 1974-6 and in the Reagan years were lying in nearly the exact same ways about the Soviet Union then as they are now about the Middle East. There's enough history on their approach to the facts that it forms a pretty clear pattern of deception.

... but it does go back to the "Team B" reviews of classified CIA data in the mid-70s. The problem for the neo-cons was that they were dealing with classified information and yet, they wanted to publish the results of their "findings." The CIA resisted this, for some understandable reasons, especially because the conclusions drawn by the so-called "Team B" review were markedly at odds with the conclusions drawn by the CIA analysts themselves.

So, the neo-cons created the first Committee on the Present Danger (the first of three incarnations of the committee) in order to publish as much as they could without violating the CIA's national security restrictions.

But, you're right--that was the origin of the now-reinstituted committee of which Lieberman is currently a member.

What's curious (and eerily funny) is that Richard Pipes, the chairman of "Team B," (actually, there were three Team Bs, looking at different aspects of the intelligence data, but the central one run by Pipes was the one that looked at strategy and planning with regard to the Soviet Union) said something almost identical about the Soviet Union that Rumsfeld said about Iraq's WMDs, the line about "the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

That's been their modus operandi for thirty years--distort the information available, make radical claims not supported by the evidence and demand radical solutions to imaginary problems. :eyes:
