Wachovia-SouthTrust layoffs number at least 1,180 in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With 354 more jobs eliminated, Wachovia Corp. has boosted the number of layoffs as a result of its SouthTrust Corp. merger to at least 1,180 in Birmingham.

The layoff numbers were updated earlier this week by the Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia, said Larry Childers, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The latest 354 layoffs will come at SouthTrust's downtown Birmingham headquarters and a training center in suburban Homewood, SouthTrust/Wachovia spokeswoman Nannette Sheaffer said Thursday.

The number of jobs will continue to change as the two banks combine, she said, but most SouthTrust employees will know by March if they will be retained.

Wachovia has said it plans to eliminate 4,300 jobs from the combined companies.
