Desperate Iraqis Clamor for Help as Powell Visits
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030914/wl_nm/iraq_complaints_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Black-robed women wept for lost sons. Old men brandished death certificates with photos of bombed homes and scarred bodies. Jobless men begged for work.

As Secretary of State Colin Powell visited the main U.S. headquarters in Baghdad Sunday, desperate Iraqis kept up a daily ritual at barbed wire barriers outside.

Knowledge that Powell was just a stone's throw away -- meeting Iraq's U.S. governor Paul Bremer inside one of the former palaces of deposed President Saddam Hussein -- heightened the clamor beyond the gates.

"He must be told that the Iraqi people have gained nothing from the American war. Now it is much worse than under Saddam," said Mushtaq Talib, 28.

1. Can't you see that this is................
liberal propaganda? In reality, they are outside throwing rose petals at Powell and dancing in the streets. They're honored to give their lives to support George W. Bush, defender of Islam. Just watch FOX news, you'll see what I mean.

2. Don't think he'll care mutch

Just like he didn't give a shit about the Vietnamese civilians wasted at My Lai. Papering over any unpleasantness to protect his bosses asses was way more important.

4. Colon was in the Americal division:
The same group as Capt. Ernest Medina and Lt. William Calley. He personally had nothing to do with it. The experience, however, didn't make him compare this present situation to that massacre.

5. Not A Direct Connection
No he didn't have anything to do with what happened, but he was the
who was given the responsibility to investigate charges leveled by
one of the troops who was there. According to records Powell never even talked to the soldier, he talked to his chain of command.

The chaina of command basically said that the soldier was a malcontent, and Powell closed the investigation. Everything was okay
until the soldier returned to the states and re-filed his charges.

In the meantime the CG of the Americal Division was so happy with the results, that when Powell didn't make the cut for his first star years later, his former commander made sure that his name was on the following list. Sort of an Affirmative Action promotion.

Powell did 2 tours in Vietnam, one in command of ARVN soldiers, and the second as a staff officer for the Americal Division. As a matter
of fact if you look into his records, you will find that he spent most
of his time in the Army going to school. He commanded soldiers for the
time required in order to meet the standards for promotion to the next higher rank.

It has been said that Powell never commanded American troops in combat, does anyone if this is true.

8. Powel wasn't specifically ordered to investigate My Lai
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 09:58 AM by JohnyCanuck
My understanding is that Powell's investigation was of a complaint from a GI, Tom Glen, alleging that he had witnessed many incidents of cruelty and abusive treatment of civilians in the course of his tour of duty. Glen was not at My Lai himself and did not refer to My Lai in his letter of complaint. However his letter was written not long after the My Lai incident and rumours about it were circulating among the troops.

If Powell had performed a legitimate investigation and follow up on Glen's allegations instead of performing a whitewash to cover his superiors, many allege that it would have been hard for Powell to have not uncovered the story about My Lai

In 1963, Capt. Colin Powell was one of those advisers, serving a first tour with a South Vietnamese army unit. Powell's detachment sought to discourage support for the Viet Cong by torching villages throughout the A Shau Valley. While other U.S. advisers protested this countrywide strategy as brutal and counter-productive, Powell defended the "drain-the-sea" approach then -- and continued that defense in his 1995 memoirs, My American Journey. (See The Consortium, July 8)

<snip>

But a test soon confronted Maj. Powell. A letter had been written by a young specialist fourth class named Tom Glen, who had served in an Americal mortar platoon and was nearing the end of his Army tour. In a letter to Gen. Creighton Abrams, the commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam, Glen accused the Americal division of routine brutality against civilians. Glen's letter was forwarded to the Americal headquarters at Chu Lai where it landed on Maj. Powell's desk.

Glen's letter contended that many Vietnamese were fleeing from Americans who "for mere pleasure, fire indiscriminately into Vietnamese homes and without provocation or justification shoot at the people themselves." Gratuitous cruelty was also being inflicted on Viet Cong suspects, Glen reported.

<snip>

Glen's letter echoed some of the complaints voiced by early advisers, such as Col. John Paul Vann, who protested the self-defeating strategy of treating Vietnamese civilians as the enemy. In 1995, when we questioned Glen about his letter, he said he had heard second-hand about the My Lai massacre, though he did not mention it specifically. The massacre was just one part of the abusive pattern that had become routine in the division, he said.

7. Powell: "Now, fellows, here's how we worked-over that My Lai 'Thing'..."
"Powell is there to assess the rebuilding of Iraq" Just heard that right this second on NPR...

Why didn't he just stay home and ask the TinMan to ask his buds over at Halliburton how it's going?
