Gibraltar chief dead in pool after investigation
By Michael Evans and Dominique Searle in Gibraltar
THE commander of British forces in Gibraltar has been found dead in his swimming pool after Ministry of Defence police ordered his return to Britain.
Eton-educated Commodore David White, 50, who took up the top military post on the British colony last May, was being investigated for allegations related to “personal” issues. He was told last Friday by the MoD police to go home on leave. His body was found the next day.
Defence sources said that although the investigation had been under way for some time, the MoD police had decided that he should be in Britain pending the outcome of the inquiry. He was not suspended. It is understood that the investigation was not concerned with financial allegations.
The MoD last night declined to give any details of the police investigation and refused to comment on reports that Commodore White had been arrested before Christmas over allegations about the possession of child pornography.
