Bra makers switch to bulletproof vests

State economic development officials today announced that a military contractor will make bulletproof vests in a Johnstown(PA) factory where bras were once produced.

Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Yablonsky said KDH Defense Systems Inc. will create 150 jobs within three years by manufacturing bulletproof vests and components for the U.S. military.

The work will be done in the Bestform Intimates facility.

The girdle manufacturers were converted to doing war work--everything from webbing to rubber boats. They switched from metal snaps and clips to buttons and drawstrings, because the metal was dear. Union suits came back into vogue. Underwear became hard to find, you MENDED it rather than toss those ratty old drawers.

I will attest to the fact that bra manufacturers have been making bulletproof brassieres for years. I encountered a few models back in the late sixties that were more than bulletproof, in fact, they might have made a good building medium for a maximum security prison or a bank vault.
